Word XBRL tagging & export

Tag report content, maintain company extensions and create an Inline XBRL report package.

Start with the XBRL edition

Install the XBRL companion and open Word. Its Tagging and Export tabs are enabled by the installed edition; there is no unlock-key entry. Standard provides normal reporting without these tools. Connect to TM1 to use the shared company extensions.

Choose the taxonomy for the report

The published catalog is loaded by the taxonomy browser and can change independently of the Companion. At the 17 October 2026 documentation review it included:

  • ESMA ESEF 2025: IAS 1 relationships.
  • Revised ESRS draft: sustainability concepts for CSRD-related reporting. This is a draft taxonomy.
  • Finnish SBR: separate entry points for individual and consolidated company financial statements.

Check the taxonomy name, version and entry point against your reporting requirements. Availability in the browser does not mean every taxonomy has a complete filing or validation workflow. The current Export panel and bundled Validate action are ESEF-oriented; they do not establish Finnish SBR or ESRS filing compliance.

Find a concept

Open Tagging → Concepts, choose the appropriate taxonomy and search or browse its concepts. Check the concept's definition, data type and period type. Prefer an existing concept that accurately describes the reported information.

Tag the content in Word

  1. Select the report content

Select an ADM table cell, a whole single-value ADM object, or ordinary document text. Tag an ADM value or AI summary as a whole object rather than putting a text tag inside content that Update replaces.

  2. Choose the concept

Use the concept's tagging action. The dialog shows the selected content. A whole ADM object can contain a number or text.

  3. Set the fact details

For numeric facts, review unit, scale and sign. Choose Reporting period or the required comparative period. Where supported, choose the taxonomy axis and member; Total (no member) uses the default.

  4. Save and review

Use Tagged to inspect occurrences, locate content, edit tags or remove a tag. Check tags after changing table rows or columns.

Relative periods and scale

Each tag has a period relative to the report: Reporting period, Previous year, or Two, Three or Four years prior. Set comparatives deliberately; headers do not automatically assign their period. Export supplies the report's actual dates. An opening balance is the previous period's closing balance, so check the relative year carefully.

Scale describes the amount represented by the displayed number. For example, a monetary value displayed in thousands needs the corresponding scale; do not scale an already expanded value twice. Review the fact preview before creating the package.

Company extensions and summations

Company extensions are stored per taxonomy in TM1. An administrator creates the initial store; permitted ADM authors can then maintain it. Readers can use existing extensions. In the extension view, Create new summation can use an existing total or define a company concept with its contributing lines and signs. Review concept properties, labels, anchors and reported validation issues before saving.

Extension changes are shared with other users of that TM1 model. Deleting a concept used by a document can prevent that document from exporting. A summation describes relationships; it does not replace checking the actual report values.

Create the report package

  1. Open Export and complete Report

Enter entity name, LEI, currency, language and the other report identifiers. Select the reporting period from an ADM filter and financial year end, or enter dates manually.

  2. Refresh the check

Click Refresh in Check after changing document content. Review issues and the fact preview. Resolve blocking issues such as missing content, invalid numbers, unavailable concepts or conflicting duplicate facts.

  3. Create report package

Click Create report package to generate the ZIP containing the Inline XBRL report and extension taxonomy. If the download does not start, use retry to save through the companion; the interface reports the saved path.

  4. Validate and review

After creating a package, click Validate to run the bundled Arelle validator locally using ESMA ESEF rules. Review errors and warnings, and use Copy results when asking for help. Open the exported report and review its layout as well as the facts.

Checks and limits

Use the taxonomy appropriate to the reporting period. The current export supports the implemented concept and dimension mappings; company-defined dimension members and multiple axes per table are not fully supported. A technically valid package still requires reporting review. Validation is not a filing submission or a guarantee that all required disclosures are present.

Report generation runs locally in the Word taskpane, with a local companion fallback for saving. The XBRL installer includes the validator; taxonomy dependencies may need network access on first use. Save the Word document to retain its tags and report settings.
