Filters & Update
Keep tables, cells and charts aligned to the same reporting context.
Refresh your report
- Review the Filters area
Filters become available from the objects and filter definitions in your report. Select the desired member for each relevant dimension, such as Period or Company.
- Choose the member
Use the member selector’s subset, search and display attribute controls to locate the right member. Confirm the selection.
- Check the update scope, then click Update
With no Objects-list selection, Update processes the report objects belonging to the active connection. If you selected objects in the list, the same Update button processes only that selection. Wait for completion and review the result.
- Check the result and save
Review the reporting period, a known number and any reported errors. Save the document after the update.
Update selected objects only
Open Objects beside Quick actions. Click one row, Ctrl-click to add or remove individual rows, or Shift-click to select a range. Choose Update selected in the dialog footer. It is disabled until one or more objects are selected and a connection is available. Unselected objects are not refreshed.
Closing the dialog keeps the selection for the main Update button. Its text remains Update; its tooltip describes the scope. Reopening Objects clears the previous selection. Use Clear selection in the list to return to a full report update. See Object selection.
Fixed members and report filters
- Fixed member in a definition: That dimension keeps the selected member when report filters change.
- Slide filter / Document filter: The dimension follows the corresponding report filter when the object is updated.
- Subset index: Uses a position in the selected subset. Reordering the subset can change the member returned.
Authors select the Filter checkbox in the member selector for dimensions that should follow report filters. A filter cannot change a dimension deliberately saved as fixed.
Show the selected member in the report
Use the filter row’s Insert action to add the selected member as report text. For example, insert Period above a chart. This text participates in Update so it can follow later selections.
Object details: Filter, Hold and Advanced
- Filter: Follows the slide or document filter member, using the saved default when no report member is selected.
- Hold: Uses a fixed member for this inserted object. Report filters and PowerPoint burst selections cannot replace it.
- Advanced: For supported direct-MDX axes: builds a set from the current report filter member. Choose Children, Descendants, Leaves or LastPeriods(n).
In Word or PowerPoint, open Objects and click the row’s information button. The details dialog is titled with the object name. Choose the mode, then run Update. Hold provides a fixed-member picker. Advanced uses the current report member as its starting point and offers a count for LastPeriods. A named TM1 view does not offer Advanced. Children returns immediate children; Descendants returns all levels below; Leaves returns leaf members, including the starting member if already a leaf. LastPeriods(n) includes the starting period and its preceding n−1 siblings, according to hierarchy order; n is not necessarily calendar months. The supported count is 1–1200. See Views & direct MDX for query restrictions.
Reports with multiple connections
Update refreshes only objects belonging to the active server/database and reports other connections as skipped. Connect to each source in turn to update its objects. Older unassigned objects are treated as belonging to the active connection, so verify that connection before their first update.
What happens to formatting?
Update is designed to preserve existing Office formatting and placement. Charts fit their existing bounds while preserving their aspect ratio when refreshed. Normal changes in paragraph count, text length and table size are handled during refresh. Existing styles are preserved where possible. Unsupported rich content can still require attention; review errors rather than assuming every object refreshed.
